Simplicity is a trait I see in all great traditional courses.... Paul McGinley

My Fitness

My Fitness

I struggle to maintain my weight and this really keeps me on my toes as I have a tendency to put on weight if I'm not careful! I generally weigh between eleven and a half and twelve stone and have managed to keep this constant over the past 10 years or so. This is an insight as to how I manage to stay in control.

At Home
To keep in trim I have converted a garage at home into a gym where I have a treadmill, weight lifters bar and several free weights. I only walk on the treadmill and generally use it on an incline (i.e. uphill) and will do sessions of between 15 and 40 minutes. I also enjoy swimming which I try and do two or three times a week - this really helps with general overall toning of the entire body.

On Tour
When I'm away on tour I have a 'Fitness Bag' that travels everywhere with me! This contains free weights for arms and legs, a Theraband which is fantastic for stretching and a Swiss Ball (with mobile pump, of course) which really helps with core stability that is so crucial for the golf swing, a mini golf club and an air cushion which is great for the legs. I also use all these items at home when I am in the gym there. I also make sure that I drink lots of water during my tournament rounds as dehydration can have disastrous effects on concentration.

Weight Maintenance
As I can gain weight easily I try to cut down on wheat based products, i.e, bread and pasta and try to eat a balanced diet of vegetables, salad, carbohydrates and protein. I'm not a big drinker but do have the occasional glass of wine. I weigh myself regularly and check out my BMI (Body Mass Index) just to make sure I'm going in the right direction!

Other
I also wear Orthotics in all of my shoes. This makes sure that my heel is hitting the ground first and helps me to walk correctly. Before I wore them I had various injuries caused by walking incorrectly.
